Reader Questions #26

I just looked lower back in my files, and the final Reader Q&A post that I did turned into in September 2012, so it is been a long time! i am now not certain why i stopped doing the series. it is kind of fun to respond to questions, specifically while they're questions i haven't gotten earlier than. anyway, i'm not certain yet if i'll be doing this on a everyday day of the week, or just sporadically when i've author's block.

on the Reader Questions posts, i will reply to questions i have acquired thru electronic mail at questions@runsforcookies.com. The questions do not ought to be about weight reduction or strolling--some thing is recreation! And Jerry stated he is up for answering questions as properly.

i'm certain you all understand this, however just understand that i am now not a health practitioner or medical expert, so the whole lot I write is based totally by myself revel in. i am a licensed strolling educate and licensed weight reduction specialist, so I don't just make matters up out of nowhere, however ;) besides, that stated, here is going the primary RQ publish in over 3 years!

Q. How many tattoos do you have? And has anyone told you that you look like Tina Majorino?

A. I had a dream last night that i used to be answering this query, that's so bizarre! the answer is one tattoo (however in my dream, I definitely had four--haha!). The handiest tattoo that i have is a ladybug on my toe, which I got when i used to be 18. I hate it. It regarded proper once I were given it, but it dwindled and the ink bled a touch over time, so now it looks like a fuzzy mole. I even get emails from folks who see my tattoo on my Wednesday Weigh-in photos, suggesting that i get it looked at because it looks like it is able to be melanoma ;) one day, perhaps i will get it eliminated, but I simply deal with it for now.

And curiously, sure--humans HAVE advised me that I look like Tina Majorino! My "actual life" pals and family do not see it, so perhaps it is just inside the way that I appearance in snap shots. I went via Tina's pictures on Google, and Jerry and that i agreed that this is the only that resembles me the maximum... but i've quite a lot 0 pix of me now not smiling, so it's difficult to mention!

Q. How do you deal with the emotional side of weight loss? As an example, I'm currently overweight and eat whatever/whenever I want without caring, so for me to go from that to having to count, measure, and care about the foods I'm eating fills me with dread and sadness. Let's face it: food is good and eating is fun! I just don't know how to get over that aspect of weight loss.

A. this is some thing I struggled with plenty while i was counting Weight Watchers points. i used to be inclined to do it all the time, however I tried now not to think too some distance beforehand. a few days, I simply got so pissed off because I wanted to just devour and not should calculate factors. it is in particular tough when going out to consume, and you cannot simply take a look at the menu and determine--you have to calculate the factors. i have even had little breakdowns at domestic while seeking to figure out what to devour!

considering I commenced calorie counting, I feel a good deal more at ease about it. plenty of eating places list the energy, which is simple. And if they don't, it's easy to make an excellent guesstimate. Now, I actually don't mind tracking my meals! I consume what I revel in, and by means of ingesting smaller portions, I experience like I enjoy the meals even greater. I take my time eating, in place of ingesting in no time.

it's miles a tough transition at the start, going from not counting/caring to having to plan/measure/tune. however after a few weeks, it genuinely will become 2d nature. I discover that planning ahead takes a number of the stress out of it. i would propose to try to spend 10 mins each nighttime making plans out tomorrow's meals, so that you don't have to come up with something whilst you're hungry. I do not know approximately you, however hungry=cranky for me

Q. You've mentioned before how you don't like some foods, like salad or some vegetables. I really admire how you've overcome things like fears of flying or dogs through exposure. Have you considered doing that with healthy foods you don't like? Or have you done that over the years with foods you now enjoy? I ask this because I used to not like a lot of healthy foods like peppers, avocado, almonds, etc. and learned to tolerate them just by exposing myself. Over time I grew to really like them.

A. this is a super question! i'm looking to think of meals that I definitely dislike, and there are best a pair that come to mind proper now--yogurt and numerous types of cheese (blue cheese, goat cheese, gouda--I essentially much like the average-joe cheeses). I used to mention that I hated salad as nicely, however I undergo phases where I consume it often. i really like Caesar salad! I can not think of any greens that I surely dislike.

besides, i am very open to attempting new meals! i have attempted yogurt dozens of instances--all the specific manufacturers, flavors--and that i still just do not find it irresistible. from time to time, i'll purchase a container to try once more, however no good fortune with that one yet. before having children, I hated green peppers. when i was pregnant with Eli, I craved them like loopy, and now green peppers are considered one of my preferred vegetables! it's form of peculiar how that works.

the principle issue i've with veggies isn't always that I dislike them, but simply that they're inconvenient to put together. i really like roasted cauliflower, for instance, but washing it, cutting it into florets, and roasting it's far quite a piece of prep work. generally, once I eat vegetables, they may be blended into something dinner i'm making--I make numerous skillet meals and casseroles, so i will throw the vegetables into that.

So basically, to reply your question, yes--i'm very open to trying meals that I dislike within the hopes that i will at some point experience them. There are loads of foods I consume now that I hated while i used to be youngster, so I accept as true with that our tastes trade over the years. Wine is every other instance--I used to hate wine, are you able to trust it? Then i discovered a candy wine that I appreciated, so I started consuming that. Renee and i formed a wine membership for our pals to get together and strive unique wines (and study them). at first, I most effective preferred the very candy ones; then I regularly commenced to just like the semi-dry wines. And now, I just like the very formidable, very dry reds--those that I hated when I first began wine tasting!

i discovered this in a book that I stuffed out while i was six years old, and i idea it turned into type of funny. I apparently used to like salad when i was a kid!

Nathan is my younger brother, for the ones of you that won't realize ;) it's so funny--Nathan turned into simply searching through his "My e-book approximately Me", and in this same page in his book, he wrote, "And please don't provide me any Jeanie. I can't stand it." (Jeanie is our sister). without a doubt, we were a very loving circle of relatives!

Thanks for the great questions!
